A few weeks ago, I was sitting in my meditation space and watching the rays of the early morning sun bringing things to life in the room around me. The light flooding through the windows had ribbons of colour as they hit the ground, and there was vitality, freshness and ‘prana’ in the air I breathed in. There is something special about dawn, and I began to contemplate the interconnectedness between living things and the earth’s energy.
Later on, in my desk research I read about a phenomenon known as Schumann’s Resonance, which is like the Earth’s heartbeat - a pattern of electro-magnetic waves that sit between the Earth surface and ionosphere (this is a layer of Earth’s upper atmosphere that is ionised by the sun and cosmos). The electric waves within the ionosphere are created by all of the energy generated by thunderstorms and lightning occurring around the planet every second. This was measured for the first time by a scientist called by Winfried Otto Schumann in 1952. He worked out that these electromagnetic waves ‘hug’ our planet and vibrate at a frequency of 7.83 Hz upwards.
Now for the interesting part – all human thought, emotion and behaviour stems from synchronised patterns of nerve impulses within our brain, known as brainwaves. While there are different patterns based on what we are doing at the time, our brains enter an ‘alpha’ state, spanning 7.5 – 12.5Hz during deep relaxation and meditation. When we are in this state, we are at the tip of a deeper state of consciousness and have more effective mental coordination, calmness, alertness, mind/body integration and learning.
The science suggests that the mirroring of frequencies between Alpha waves (7.5+Hz) and the base Schumann Resonance (SR) frequency of 7.83Hz is why meditation and deep relaxation lead to deeper states of consciousness and calm. We are essentially synchronising with the patterns of the planet i.e. Earth’s natural electromagnetic frequencies. It is when this frequency within us is constantly disrupted or neglected that we reach ill-health, emotional depletion and sickness.
Interestingly also, this resonance is a multiple of the frequency of the ancient AUM mantra, used by vedas and rishis thousands of years ago to access deeper states of consciousness and healing. AUM is known as an isochronic tone (a tone that is turned on and off rapidly to create sharp, distinctive pulses of sound). It is widely accepted as the first ‘sound’ of the universe and generates a frequency of 432Hz, which is the same vibrational frequency found through all of nature in balance and correlates with us in a meditative state.
More coming up next time on the power of AUM, but for now, keep going with your meditation practice, try and make the effort to connect with nature and enter a state of stillness and relaxation, do some deep breath work to connect the rhythm of the body with the breath. This is centering, calming and nourishing to the soul.
