Backbends for boosting energy, circulation and warming you up!

Chakrasana (the wheel pose) is beneficial to practice in Spring season and when seeking to energise the body. Here are some thoughts and tips on the pose.

This asana can be likened to a 'bridge' between the chakras on an energetic level, and a 'bridge' between the legs and the arms via the spine on a physical level. When practiced with diaphragmatic breathing and pushing up through the spine and navel centre (to hold and sustain the pose), you bring more awareness to the energy body and awakens the energy centres. 

Deepening the focus on the navel centre is connected to the fire centre of the body, stimulating the digestive fire, Agni. The chest opening helps to expand the breath and lung capacity. This posture is very energising and warming so can be helpful to practice on cold days and in the early part of Spring.

To set up for the asana, try and practice bridge pose and table top pose until you feel comfortable and steady first. This might take a few days to weeks, depending on your practice. Then, when you are feeling steady in the shoulders, arms and legs, give chakrasana a go! Start with resting the top of the head on the floor / mat first before attempting the full bridge. Go slow. If it feels shaky and unsteady you may not be ready - try a few more days of the base pose practice. 

Please avoid this asana if you are pregnant, suffer from any heart ailments, high blood pressure, fatigue or weakness, hypertension, weak wrists / arms / shoulders or if it just doesn’t feel right or good. Best to attempt under the guidance of a teacher if doing for the first time, and contact us if you have any questions.
