Purusha and Prakriti | Exploring Masculine and Feminine Energies

Evolution expands out of a state of primordial stillness where passive awareness and the unmanifested seed potential were in a state of equilibrium.

Purusha is the state of passive awareness, the silent observer, the witness. It is referred to as a masculine energy. Prakriti is the unmanifested seed that holds the potential for all of creation. Referred to as a feminine quality, she holds all the attributes of experience.

According to the Samkhya-karika for the perception of nature by the spirit and for the isolation of the spirit there must be the necessary union of both purusha and prakriti and from this union stems evolution.

Prakriti is the basic cosmic material that is the root of all beings, and Purusha is the conscious energy that governs life and reality. The cosmic entity, Purusha, exists beyond the realms of time and space and combines with Prakriti to form this world of creation. Prakriti is the innate seed of potential. Purusha is required for proactivity to be realised and for the seed to be opened.

The masculine is realised by the doing, the seeing. The feminine is realised by its innate qualities, all potential lies within.

This wisdom can be applied to everyday life too, by drawing inspiration from our true nature. Many of us today exercise a stronger dominance of the masculine, the doing. This is not linked to gender but energy. When you are stuck in the overactive masculine, your worth then becomes linked to how much you achieve. To validate this worth we need to keep doing, proving to feel satisfied, enough. While this energy is crucial to keep the wheels turning and life flowing there must also be an activation of the feminine – to keep the balance, regardless of gender or orientation.

Activation of the feminine is simply remembering your worth is INNATE. This looks like connecting with your body by listening to it, slowing down, staying receptive to support, connection, love, flow, trusting. It’s open and flowing, non-linear. This can be scary – we are so used to predicting, keeping things going where we can see it.

If you are curious about balancing, start with the most simple approach – slow down and listen. To your body – what’s it’s saying? To your mind and heart. Then connect with it by reciprocating – if you need to slow down, do that. If you need to speed up, do that. But you must first slow down and listen. There is so much to learn.
