Make your own Ayurvedic Winter Tea

Following on from the post on the qualities of winter season and how to maintain wellness using the principles of ayurveda, here is a spicy and warming winter tea to help shake off the winter blues. Ingredients: Water, 1 tsp fennel seeds, 2-3 pods of cardamom, 3-4 black pepper seeds, 1 whole clove, 1 pod star anise, 1/2 cinnamon stick, 1 tsp grated fresh ginger or a few slices of fresh ginger

  1. In a large saucepan, boil water over high heat (about 1 cup per serve)

  2. Add in 1 tablespoon of the mix per cup, reduce heat and simmer for ten minutes. Strain and serve by itself as a herbal tea

  3. Alternatively, add all spices and sliced ginger into a mug and add boiling water. Allow to steep for 2-5 minutes and enjoy straight away!

  4. You can also make this a spicy chai by grinding all the spices in a spice grinder (except ginger) and place the spice mix plus grated ginger and loose black tea leaves (to desired strength of tea, the more tea leaves the stronger the tea) in a saucepan, add water and bring to the boil. Remove from heat and strain into cups, add soy or nut milk and sweetener to taste. Enjoy hot!
